Tramadol clinical trials and results

Any medication that enters the market has to go through a series of clinical trials in order to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. And Tramadol is not an exception.

Introduced more than two decades ago, Tramadol is now available all over the world under different brand names and variations. However, the effectiveness of the active ingredients is similar in all of these formulations. And the results of these trials can be interpreted as very positive.

A large number of trials was aimed at identifying the types of pain Tramadol is effective against. It turns out that Tramadol can effectively address virtually any type of pain regardless of its actual cause. Because Tramadol works by blocking receptors in the brain that are responsible for interpreting pain signals it really doesn't matter where these signals come from and by which processes they are triggered. As long as the brain doesn't receive these signals the person won't feel any pain at all. So it doesn't matter whether you're dealing with an injury or an internal inflammation – Tramadol will effectively eliminate the painful sensation.

Another set of trials included a comparative analysis between Tramadol and other potent painkillers such as morphine and codeine. Because all these drugs make part of the opioid drug class their mechanism of action is identical whereas the actual effects delivered differ a lot. Potent painkillers such as codeine and morphine are infamous for their severe side effects such as dizziness, lack of concentration, drowsiness and even hallucinations. That's why these medications are only used in medical facilities. Tramadol on the other hand doesn't deliver such a profound depressing effect on the central nervous system and doesn't cause such severe side effects.
